Mindanao Leaders

Can Mindanao manage its own affairs?

Mindanao was once the backwaters of the Philippines, an image that was etched to the minds of people outside of the islanc (specially those in Metro Manila). Despite the development, the mushrooming of universities that could challenge the quality of those in Metro Manila and Visayas, the stereoptyped image remained.

People here are percieved to less educated, one reason why the cry for federalism is facing a difficult birth. The powers that be in Manila believes that Mindanao is not yet ready. A belief similar to the American’s with Philippines. It made Quezon to comment; :”I would prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos to one run like heaven by Americans, because no matter how bad, a Filipino government might be improved.”

In the same vein, I would like to echo, I would prefer Mindanao being governed like hell but according to the whims of its people, not one run like heaven by Manilans. Maybe Mindanaoan leaders are not yet as astute as their Manila counterparts are, but they will learn.

So federalism, or autonomy must be pursued.
